Cuatro veteranos pilotos del ejército del aire de los EE.UU. ven cumplidos sus deseos de convertirse en astronautas y viajar al espacio aunque sea con cuarenta años de retraso. Su misión es reparar un gran satélite de comunicaciones ruso, que se ha salido de su órbita, para evitar que caiga sobre la Tierra. El satélite en cuestión había sido diseñado por Frank Corvin, el capitán de la expedición. Tras un severo y, a veces, hilarante entrenamiento, estos veteranos astronautas tropezarán en el espacio con problemas más difíciles de lo que esperaban.
