En el sur de Boston, en la década de 1970, el agente del FBI John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) convence al mafioso irlandés James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp), un delincuente recién salido de la cárcel, para que colabore con el FBI y elimine a un enemigo común: la mafia italiana. Con lo elegantes y refinada que  parece ser Boston y la cantidad de individuos indeseables que han surgido en sus calles, desde el célebre estrangulador hasta el mafioso aquí protagonista, Whitey Bulger, uno de los tipos más sanguinarios del crimen organizado durante los 70 y 80, acusado de 19 asesinatos y ni se sabe de cuantos más como responsable de su banda. Su hermano, Billy, llegó a ser ex presidente del Senado de Massachusetts.

El individuo en cuestión está encarnado admirablemente por un Johnny Depp, que me retrotrae a los tiempos del su igualmente ejemplar DONNIE BRASCO. Cierto que los implantes y una cierta rigidez facial bien podrían generar antipatías en muchos, pero su intensidad controlada acaba aflorando ante cualquier situación. Como se puede constatar en esa soberbia secuencia como la de la comida en que gasta una desazonadora broma a uno de sus lugartenientes, tal vez la mejor de la película junto a la que le antecede con la esposa de su “antagónico” al otro supuestamente lado de la ley.

Precisamente el duelo entre éste, un inspector del FBI encarnado por el magnífico actor australiano Joel Edgerton (Ramsés II en EXODUS: DIOSES Y REYES) y Depp es uno de los puntos fuertes de la función. Hay más, pero varios de ellos están presididos por una cierta sequedad expresiva que impiden mi incondicionalidad.

Por supuesto, es una buena película de gángsters, oscura y realista, pero no me acaba de impactar o sorprender, sí lo hace en cambio la historia del sujeto en cuestión. Pero no encuentro ningún detalle especialmente distinguido, original o innovador. Algunas secuencias tienen temperatura, otras me parecen excesivamente dependientes de unos primeros planos que no me causan mayor tensión.

Sin duda, el cine de Scorsese está presente en cuerpo y en espíritu, las referencias son inevitables en cuanto a resolución de escenas y recreación de atmósferas. Van de MALAS CALLES a la imprescindible UNO DE LOS NUESTROS. También si me apuran a SLEEPERS de Barry Levinson, curiosamente del director inicialmente previsto para llevar a cabo este proyecto.

Finalmente recaló en las manos del ex actor Scott Cooper, en el que constituye su tercer trabajo tras las cámaras. El primero sirvió en bandeja a otro de los más grandes desde hace tiempo, Jeff Bridges, su único Oscar hasta la fecha (obtendría otro más a la mejor canción). El segundo no ha sido estrenado en España pero recibió también alabanzas, OUT OF THE FURNACE.

Este demuestra que –lo lleva en el ADN- trabaja muy bien con los actores, probablemente su mejor cualidad. A veces resulta un tanto solemne o grave, pero demuestra solidez, como un buen dry Martini… justo esta bebida responde al nombre de una de sus primeras apariciones (de 1998) como actor.

Sus 122 minutos no se me hacen en absoluto pesados. Se ve con agrado, si encima son aficionados al género se le puede conceder un relativo plus.
