“Me llamo Forrest… Forrest Gumpppp”, “La vida es una caja de bombones, nunca sabes lo que te va a tocar”, “Tonto es el que dice tonterías”… Estas y otras frases aparentemente elementales pero emblemáticas y con bastante sentido, dan sabor y color a una película que se erige hoy en día como una de las mejores de toda la década de los 90. Algo nada extraño sabiendo que detrás de la cámara se encontraba el nunca suficientemente ponderado Robert Zemeckis.  

Tras haberlo obtenido el año anterior por PHILADELPHIA, constituyó el segundo Oscar consecutivo del grandísimo Tom Hanks, que volvería a crear un personaje para las antologías. De gran riesgo y dificultad, pues de haberse pasado tan sólo un poco en su composición,  hubiera convertido en grotesco o increíble lo que se pretendía convincente dentro de su singular personalidad. Lo bordó, resulta especialmente conmovedor, candoroso y desarmante en su simpleza. Como una pluma agitada por el tiempo.  

Y en su tramo más de brisa, a lo largo de su periplo vital, está acompañándole  esa preciosa, paciente y comprensiva mujer, Jenny Curran, interpretada con infinita dulzura por Robin Wright. Inolvidable el momento en el que es solicitada en matrimonio. Las caritas de ambos constituyen todo un poema arrebatador.  

FORREST GUMP personaje y FORREST GUMP película es única, comienza y finaliza en sí misma. Es una rara y apasionante avis. Sin descendientes por tanto. Espero que nadie dentro de unos años se acuerde de ella para contarnos cualquier prolongación majadera.

No deja de ser una revisión,  a veces no tan complaciente como pudiera parecer, de la historia estadounidense que va de la década de los 50 a los 70. Hay indudable ironía, cargas de profundidad en que el entrañable pero un tanto bobo Forrest sea el único que cree en figuras y acontecimientos que no parecen tan heroicos como fueron vendidos en su momento. Cuanto menos, aquí quedan relativizados. Y alberga una secuencia de lo más reveladora que refleja la bobaliconería del ser humano, como es esa travesía del desierto, esa carrera hacia ninguna meta y esa parada en seco ante la desolación de los seguidistas por qué sí o de quien nunca se cuestiona nada.

Seis Oscar la coronaron, entre ellos el de película y director, pero sobre todo la coronó el reconocimiento crítico y popular.  

La factura es verdaderamente impecable y sus efectos digitales, revolucionarios en su momento, continúan conservando un enorme encanto y siendo un referente, aunque once años antes un tal Woody Allen ya nos había sorprendido con recursos parecidos en la asombrosa e inclasificable ZELIG.  

Emotiva, excepcional, irrepetible.
