Nunca ha sido una película demasiado bien considerada por una buena parte de la crítica, ni tan siquiera en el momento de su estreno, pero debo admitir que a mí me provoca un enorme placer. Es cine antiguo en el sentido más noble del término, del que ya no se fabrica, con un encanto imperecedero y, a la vez, renovable.  

En su momento cosechó cinco importantes Oscar, dos sobre todo, a la mejor película, guión adaptado, fotografía, banda sonora y montaje. La verdad es que los elementos técnicos funcionan y se conjuntan a las mil maravillas.  

Desglosando esas estatuillas, debo decir que el de mejor película es comprensible, es una super producción familiar, rodada en su momento en el atrevido y espectacular, también efímero, sistema de todd-ao, que engrandecía cualquier historia, más si era de las características heroicas de esta. Cogida a cachitos, resultan una serie de bellas estampas como las de aquellas novelas ilustradas por Doré. O si lo prefieren, a las láminas, las ilustraciones de aquellas inolvidables colecciones de Bruguera.  

El guión adaptado, me parece una inteligente trasposición de la estupenda novela del visionario Julio Verne. Es lo suficientemente divulgativa y didáctica. Las muchas licencias que se permite, como el hecho de que Picaporte sea el popularísimo actor mejicano Mario Moreno Cantinflas, agilizan la acción. Su humor es capaz de entremezclar el  más inteligente y el más saludable de comedia bufa, sin pasarse jamás.  

La fotografía de Lionel Lindon capta en toda su grandeza exóticos y vistosos escenarios a lo largo y ancho del mundo. Los referidos a España tienen auténtica gracia, por mucho que algunos se molestasen por los tópicos adjudicados. Pero ese baile flamenco tabernario o esa peculiarísima corrida de toros, con el mismísimo Luis Miguel Dominguín acudiendo al quite, me generan tirón.  

La banda sonora de Victor Young  es un clásico inapelable. El score que compuso  traslada a mundos aventureros y ensoñados. Gran partitura. El montaje es, sencillamente, perfecto. Va uniendo lances y episodios con enorme habilidad.  

Su homenaje a diversos géneros, desde el musical al negro, pasando por la comedia, el de acción, el western o el de aventuras exóticas, es otro de sus múltiples reclamos.  

Y para rematar todo esto, el flemático David Niven (no cabe concebir un mejor Phileas Fogg), el citado Cantinflas y la adorable y aquí muy jovencita Shirley MacLaine, al frente de un reparto multiestelar de más de cincuenta estrellas en breves y regocijantes cameos: Charles Boyer, Peter Lorre, John Carradine, Frank Sinatra, Ronald Colman, Fernandel, Marlene Dietrich, Buster Keaton, el inolvidable Joe E. Brown “Bocazas” de la memorable secuencia final de CON FALDAS Y A LO LOCO…  

Es divertida, tiene chispa, encanto. Es entretenimiento puro y duro de principio a fin. ¿Se le puede pedir más al cine? Claro que sí, pero esto es tan legítimo como el mejor, más reflexivo y más profundo de los tratados.
